HistoryEarly daysThe roots of the Fast Group go back to the 1980's. At that time we started to handle a traffic of chemicals loaded in the Polish port of Szczecin and discharged in English, Scottish and Irish ports. Until 1983 there was an average quantity shipped of 5.000mt per annum in small coasters ranging in size from 400 upto 700 dwt. Since 1984 the volume was growing rapidly and the efficient handling of goods in loading and discharging ports became very important in order to deal with the changing circumstances. The founder of Fast, Mr Herman Scheers, together with his business partner, decided to build a new, modern warehouse in the port of Szczecin in Poland to cope with these demands. In the UK importers rented a special warehouse in the port of Howdendyke on the river Ouse. Things were proceeding pretty well when during the second half of 1989 a number of things happened. Herman Scheers' business partner died suddenly, the political situation in Poland and other Central European countries was rapidly changing and the UK trading company importing the chemicals was faced with changes of their shareholders. Cornered by these events Herman Scheers decided to go ahead with the Polish warehouse on his own. At that time Fast Lines Belgium, Fast Shipping UK, Fast Baltic and Fast Terminals Szczecin were founded. This was the start of the Fast Group. |
